Sadly, there’s no video to go along with today’s holiday flashback, but if it existed, I imagine it would involve lots of moody, soft-focus shots of smeared black eyeliner. Also, velvet.

For the uninitiated, allow me to cite the terse and (I suspect) entirely earnest Wikipedia entry on Ministry’s synthy little goth anthem:

“‘(Every Day Is) Halloween’ is a 1984 single by Ministry, re-released in 2010. The title and lyrics refer to goth subculture, particularly clothing, such as in the passage ‘I dress this way just to keep them at bay.’ It also questions the intolerance and lack of acceptance for others who are different.”

What it doesn’t mention is Cuban-born Al Jourgensen’s ridiculous faux-British accent, oh-so-critical to the song’s appeal.

The highlight of a Halloween mix I got this month from my CD club. Amazing.

flashback friday: “pure moods” by v

If you were watching television 20 or so years ago, you likely remember the ubiquitous commercials for the Pure Moods compilation. These featured such luminaries as Enya, Enigma, and Kenny G — not to mention the dance remix of the X-Files theme and “Tubular Bells,” in case you find The Exorcist soothing. The ad, as shown on this kind YouTuber’s television, is even more hilariously bodice-ripper-esque than I remembered.

The Stepkids’ “Memoirs of Grey” off of their new Troubadour evokes big bushy 70’s mustaches — I needed more Steely Dan soundalikes in my life.

For possibly the first time ever, Ms. Spears has released a single with lyrical merit, espousing the notion that good things come to those who bust ass — “You want a Lamborghini? You better work, bitch.” Also, the faux-British accent we heard on that will.i.am collaboration last year is still in full effect. You just never know with this one.
