As you’ll recall, Swedish pop duo Roxette was a darling of the adult contemporary set 20+ years ago (a friend’s reaction to hearing “It Must Have Been Love” recently was, “I feel like I’m driving to church with my parents”). But what you likely didn’t know is that it was first written as a holiday song, per the request of EMI Germany — the song’s original title was “It Must Have Been Love (Christmas for the Broken Hearted),” and it was kind of a big deal in Sweden. Two years later, they removed a single holiday reference from the lyrics, dropped the parenthetical, and got it onto the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Point: Roxette.
