I wanted to like Pure Bathing Culture’s debut, Moon Tides, based on the strength of “Pendulum” (four minutes of vaguely Wilson Phillips-esque vocals) and the duo’s status as erstwhile members of Vetiver, but noooo. As it turns out, the album sort of fizzles into far-too-easy listening, with no real peaks or valleys to speak of and a per-song chorus count that’s a bit high for my liking. In short, it’s a pleasant miasma of ’80s pop references — “Sexual Healing” and Benny Mardones’ creeper anthem “Into the Night” among them — that isn’t bad, but isn’t especially notable either. To all those who’ve made Beach House comparisons, pshaw, I say.

Have a listen at the Guardian.
