Simply Red’s “Holding Back the Years,” a tearful and trumpet-heavy reflection on aging, was recently described to me as something you listen to on your headphones walking home from happy hour while thinking about how much you hate your wife. GRIM! But depressing though it might be, that whole “holdin, holdin, holdin, AAAAAAAAAAAA” breakdown is undeniable.

Interestingly, the “Holding Back the Years” you know and (possibly) love actually isn’t the first incarnation of the song. Years earlier, singer Mike Hucknall was in a band called The Frantic Elevators, and the original, more guitar-driven version of “Years” was actually the last single they released, in 1984. Have a listen.
