If there’s anyone whose songwriting leans heavily on a storehouse of key phrases, it’s Trent Reznor — he’s constantly crawling on his hands on knees, wondering how this can be real, or describing his inabiity to feel. “Came Back Haunted,” the first single from Nine Inch Nails’ forthcoming Hesitation Marks (with a seizure-inducing video courtesy of David Lynch), is no different: aggressive beats, a chorus that rhymes “I said goodbye” with “I had to try”, and the now-standard discordant guitar solo. But there’s something to that familiarity — dude’s got a style and he’s sticking to it, and as Steele points out, this is going to sound amazing live.

Also, in case you were concerned about diminishing angst in Reznor’s new-father years, the track listing includes songs titled “All Time Low” and “Disappointed.” Confidence restored!
