don't you tell me how i feel.

flashback friday: “ms. jackson” by v

It may not be their biggest hit ever, but Outkast’s “Ms. Jackson” deftly merged weighty content and smooth sounds–raising it to a level that “Hey Ya,” fun though it might be, doesn’t quite reach.

As I recall, this was previously uncharted territory in pop music: Not only did it include a warped version of the wedding march, it navigated the touchy baby daddy/baby grandma relationship, as inspired by Andre 3000’s dealings with Erykah Badu’s mother. SO MANY FEELINGS.

There’s nary a baby in sight in the video, but there is a menagerie of animals singing along while Andre 3000 and Big Boi frantically repair their leaky roof during a storm (metaphorrrr). Props to them for avoiding the obvious narrative…and finding a way to incorporate a cat in a tire swing.
