Toro 4

Toro Y Moi’s last record, Underneath the Pine, was undoubtedly the soundtrack to countless summer barbecues in 2010, but his latest effort, Anything in Return, seems apt for its winter release — it’s a slightly more pensive addition to producer/frontman Chazwick Bundick’s eminently danceable, vintage-sounding oeuvre.

Though I wanted to love it unabashedly, Return is also slightly frontloaded, kinda bloated, and contains one legitimate misstep (the baldly cheesy, over-the-top poppy “Cake”), but those quibbles didn’t deter the jubilant crowd at Toro’s Webster Hall performance last week.

TYM was preceded by Dog Bite, a droney band whose album, Velvet Changes, I had been enjoying up until I saw them live, when it became clear that the frontman is actually tone-deaf. Alas!

Wild Belle 2

They were followed by Wild Belle, a reggae-influenced group fronted by a woman with a voice like a sexy frog croak and bolstered by well-timed saxophone bursts. Though a lot of the songs felt similar, I’m a real sucker for anything dubby, and they were particularly delightful after Opening Band #1.

And then there was Toro — Bundick, along with a guitarist, bassist, drummer, and light show. Overall, I was nonplussed by the set: with few exceptions (exciting renditions of “Still Sound” and the excellent new “Say That” among them), the execution was so on-point, it was more or less like listening to the record at home…although the mix was so muddy in spots that the finer details often got lost. All of which is to say, Bundick is a hell of a producer, but performing may not be his strong suit.
