flashback friday: “smack my bitch up” by v

Few songs in recent memory have ruffled quite as many feathers as “Smack My Bitch Up.” Not only did it spur accusations of misogyny (which the band denied) and all kinds of censorship, it was also voted the most controversial video of all time by MTV. Fascinating, considering there are only two lyrics in the entire song, and they’re actually a Kool Keith sample (granted, this was pre-Odd Future…). The video, shown from a dizzying first-person perspective, follows the seemingly male protagonist through a bacchanalian/violent night out. The evening culminates in a gotcha moment when he is revealed to be a she. Whether this was a calculated move to combat the haters and suggest that women, too, can smack bitches up, is unclear. Whether that would actually solve their PR problem is equally murky.

On a lighter note, you should click through to the YouTube page and admire this particular uploader’s defensive description.
