I’ve been meaning to write about Wesley Willis on this blog for ages, and though it won’t be a Flashback for everyone, I figured it was about damn time. For the uninitiated, Willis was a schizophrenic musician and artist based in Chicago who composed simple songs on his keyboard, often about celebrities (“Alanis Morissette,” “Kurt Cobain,” “Arnold Schwarzenegger”), bus rides gone wrong, or doing battle with superheroes (“I Wupped Batman’s Ass”).

The formula is simple: The chorus is usually the song title repeated six or seven times, and every song concludes with his signature signoff: “Rock over London, Rock on Chicago,” followed by a slogan (“Wheaties: Breakfast of Champions”). Over time, Willis developed a giant callus on his forehead, the result of greeting his fans with a headbutt. I don’t pretend that any of this makes sense, but it is fascinating.

Sadly, Willis died of leukemia in 2003, but I continue to enjoy his bizarre body of work. Today, I give you one of my favorites, “Merry Christmas.”
