I forgot The Eels even existed until last week, when I learned they were playing a show in NYC in support of a new album, Wonderful, Glorious.

This immediately brought me back to high school, when I saw frontman Mark Oliver Everett open for Fiona Apple with a dour little solo set (MOODY BILL ALERT). I promptly revisited The Eels’ Beautiful Freak, a record that I remembered as sullen and misanthropic, but in retrospect feels weirdly poppy and palatable. Huh.

At any rate, Mr. Everett has apparently been making music all this time, and his new offering, “Peach Blossom,” maintains that unquestionably Eelsian quality. I’m not in love with it, but the consistency is kind of comforting so many years later.
