The death of Andy Williams this week reminded me of the classic opening scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, in which Audrey Hepburn’s “American Geisha” does what I now know to be kind of a walk of shame. Williams debuted his vocals-added version at the 1962 Oscars, when the movie came out. Though the song has been associated with him ever since, it was never released as a single or made the charts. Kind of a weird thing to be forever associated with, given that, but Lord knows there are worse things to have in the top paragraph of your obituary.

Anyway, one of my other favorite pop-culture moments involving this admittedly schmaltzy composition was in Sex and the City‘s “I Heart NY,” a bittersweet valentine to the city that aired in the months after 9/11. Don’t watch the whole clip; the first 3 minutes will do. And then let’s never again mention that I brought up Sex and the City on this blog.
