I remember Sublime’s 1996 self-titled record with some fondness: its beachy, lazy feel, its exploration of such diverse topics as burritos and looting. But it’s their good-girl-gone-bad song we return to today. The video for “Wrong Way” depicts our heroine’s transformation from unappreciated daughter-slash-housekeeper to independent lady (the shorn hair and convertible are clear cues, people) with the aid of the song’s narrator. Of course, she bolts once she spots security tackling her boyfriend for lifting honeybuns from a convenience store. Smart move, girly.

But just when you think she’s in the clear, she suffers some kind of meltdown, indicated by visions of her previous life (always rendered in circuslike color) and her current life (black-and-white) fusing into some sort of psychic maelstrom. Outcome unclear. The end!

I’d also like to point out here that Sublime is one of those bands that continued to tour for some time despite having a deceased singer (albeit with a slightly different name) — Alice in Chains is the other unfortunate example that comes to mind. WHO GOES TO SEE THIS STUFF.
