As August 2012 draws to a close, Peaking Lights’ Lucifer remains high on my list of summer albums. The dubby, atmospheric sound of last year’s 936 remains in effect, as does the feeling that it was intended for post-sundown listening — daytime doesn’t suit Indra Dunis’ haunted vocals.

The biggest change of note from last year’s record is the weird kid-centric thing happening here, which compels me to dock a few points. Track two, “Beautiful Son,” is pretty clear in its meaning, which I can deal with (though I could do without the floating baby heads in the video). But the gurgling-child samples on “Lo Hi” sully what is otherwise one of Lucifer’s high points. I get it, you had a kid. Do you really need to sample him?

Magically, the album stream is still active at the Guardian — check it out here.
