Recent Gotye mania (an SNL performance! a dance remix!) has prompted me to revisit his 2006 Like Drawing Blood, which remains a masterfully layered collage of sounds. The insane precision of the record called to mind Daniel J. Levitin’s This Is Your Brain on Music, which breaks down why we respond to certain sequences of sounds. Not sure if Gotye’s read it, but Blood taps all of those happiness receptors with seeming effortlessness — beats come in and out at exactly the right times, hooks are catchy without becoming overly repetitive, songs slowly build to anguished Gotyean howls. A modern classic, without doubt.

Above, my favorite song from the album, in which Wally De Backer calmly, bassily displays his loathing for customer-service-by-phone.
