The Magnetic Fields’ new Love at the Bottom of the Sea continues their tireless exploration of love and social ineptitude in minute and painful detail. Here, our narrators vary from the virgin primly rebuffing a lover’s advances (“God Wants us To Wait”) to a drag of a partygoer who gawks at other guests’ plastic surgery and cocaine use (“Horrible Party”). Other highlights include the campy “Infatuation with your Gyration,” and, of course “Andrew in Drag,” which was previously lauded on DYTMHIF.

No surprises here, people: Sea is deadpan and cutting as ever. Hell of a guy, that Stephin Merritt.

This is terrific. Mag.Fi at their best: short, shimmering and hilariously specific.
