This week I found myself returning to The Bends, a classic record from a time when Radiohead favored traditional pop structures, back before they woke up sucking on lemons, when Thom Yorke still sounded like a dude singing and not a man recently possessed by an alien entity (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

And can I just say, it really holds up 15-plus years later — from the spacey reverb of “Planet Telex” to the death-knell guitar of “Street Spirit (Fade Out).”

But today I wanted to talk about “High and Dry,” possibly Radiohead’s most radio-friendly song ever. In this video, we meet a cast of miserable characters, one of whom strongly resembles the guy from Train, all gathered at Dick’s diner. But don’t be fooled — there’s more to this than people gazing forlornly at their french fries as they lip-synch along (ahem bombs). Bet you didn’t see this one coming, kids!*

*unless of course you’ve seen this video
