Metal group Anvil emerged at the same time as classic acts like the Scorpions, Anthrax and Metallica, but something went awry. Despite their notable rock antics (playing guitar with a dildo among them), they just never rose to the same degree of fame and quickly fell off the radar. But, as we learn from the unintentionally hilarious documentary Anvil: The Story of Anvil, that didn’t stop these dogged, humble, insanely earnest musicians. Lead singer “Lips” works In Toronto as a caterer by day, and drummer Robb Reiner (no relation) leads a similarly regular-Joe life. But the duo continues to play as Anvil at local dive bars by night. Famous or not, metal is their driving force, and they have the catalog to prove it.

The film follows the band as they adopt an inept manager-fan who leads them on a mishap-ridden tour through Europe. The most remarkable bit is that despite the serious shitshow that transpires, a fury-free Lips is convinced that the manager operated with the best possible intent.

SERIOUSLY. CANADIAN PEOPLE ARE SO POSITIVE.

Anyway, they go on to record an album, etc. etc., but the point is less the music than the dudes. THIS IS spinal tap. Highly recommended…and currently on Netflix instant watch.
