A long time ago, Steele recommended the Metallica documentary, Some Kind of Monster, to me. Several years later, I finally got around to watching it — and oh, it is excellent indeed, whether or not you care about Metallica.

If you haven’t seen this gem of a self-help-slash-rock-and-roll documentary, it follows the rockers during the fraught recording of their critically-reviled St. Anger record, when they enlisted a therapist to help mediate their frequent flare-ups. 90% of the drama comes from Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, with the badass Kirk Hammett coming off as a relative saint. His only indignant moment comes when Lars suggests that guitar solos are passe. UM, SERIOUSLY, YOU’RE METALLICA.

Anyway, it’s definitely a humanizing look at a bunch of rock stars — you get to see James Hetfield attending his daughter’s ballet practice, and Lars hanging out with his wizardly father. And of course, there’s the hunt for a new bassist after the departure of Jason Newsted — Robert Trujillo’s tryout does not disappoint. And, as Steele points out, “Dave Mustaine CRIES!”

For real y’all.
