“Zombie,” The Cranberries’ 1994 hit protesting various Irish conflicts, does not attempt to be in any way attractive. It’s screechy, chugging, and abrasive, but come on, who doesn’t love that chorus?

The video is fittingly bleak — opening with black-and-white shots of bedraggled schoolkids faced with a seeming military occupation. But of course, the Cranberries ARE a ’90s rock band, so there was no getting around the overt, supersaturated religious imagery…and the gold body paint, obvs.

Surely you’re wondering what became of Dolores O’Riordan and her angsty crew. Somewhat surprisingly, my sources at Wikipedia tell me the band actually released an album this year and have one in the works for 2012. Um, marketing? More interesting, perhaps, was this tidbit: “On 10 September 1995, the band Faith No More played [“Zombie”] live at the ‘Monsters of Rock’ Festival in Estadio Ferrocarril Oeste at Buenos Aires, Argentina.” Oh, to hear the Mike Patton version…
