This Lou Reed and Metallica thing was a bad idea, guys. I’m sure you thought it would be amazing to merge drug-rock with James Hetfield’s growling, but good lord, this is a mess of spectacular proportions. I feel like we’re listening to something that was never intended to be released into the universe — the horrible horrible outtakes you keep on tape in your underwear drawer to remind you of how far you’ve come. A mistake, in short.

“Pumping Blood” makes one’s brain hurt, as it forces you to reconcile an intentionally screechy guitar solo with random baby-giggling, Reed’s old-man croak, and a half-assed chorus. And just when you thought it was over, the ruckus continues—for seven minutes and twenty-four seconds. Granted, this is one song on an entire record and I am being horribly unfair in not listening to the rest of it. But can you blame me?

My guess is this was done with every intention of being arty and terrible because they’re all already famous and who cares.

My final word on this: Babyshambles is more listenable. At least we can assume Pete Doherty’s excuse was chemical.
