I’m completely in love with the Austra record, Feel it Break, which hails from the land of goth while artfully steering clear of cheese (quite a feat). Kate Stelmanis’ voice is an instrument, and she uses it as such, “Lose It” (below) being the prime example.

After a few weeks of listening to the record on repeat, it’s become clear that the Austra secret is the slow build, not to mention insane attention to detail. The synth-and-vocal intro to the first track, “Darken Her Horse,” swells into a sinister dance tune with a plaintive chorus, setting the tone for the rest of the album. But lead single “Beat and the Pulse” is easily the standout here. It’s just so evil.

If you’re way the hell into Fever Ray and/or Depeche Mode, this may well be your record of the year. Speaking of which, Depeche Mode recently put out a remix album. If you’re interested in unspeakably boring house music with Dave Gahan on vocals, give it a whirl. Nice move, DM. GOD.
