As predicted, our man Trent Reznor got mad respect from the Academy last night for the minimalist, synthed-out score he and Atticus Ross composed for The Social Network. I know we keep making fun of Trent around here because he got married and started acting like he’s the first person who ever fell in love, but the dude really earned this. The music was terrific. It all sounded awesome.

Not surprisingly (to anyone who has ever seen Trent play live, that is) he gave an incredibly gracious acceptance speech, saying what all of us Nine Inch Nails fans were thinking:

“Wow. Is this really happening?

“When we finished, we were very proud of our work and happy just to be involved with this film, and to be standing up here in this company is humbling and flattering beyond words.”

Backstage, he told reporters that Inception composer Hans Zimmer was rooting for them to win.

“Hans Zimmer, who I’ve been battling at awards shows all year, told me, ‘In a lot of ways, I hope you win because it’s helped open up the field a bit for texture of what film scores can be.’ I am truly stunned by this. David [Fincher] bugged us to do it. I’m very glad we did. It’s been the best experience I’ve ever had from start to finish.”

Later, he expressed himself in a more traditionally Trent fashion:
