This week I’ve been reading a compilation of rock criticism, and I fell in love with a review (by Ann Powers, in the Village Voice) of PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me upon its release in 1993. This is such an apt description:

“Polly Jean Harvey takes for granted that eroticism hurts, that nothing pretty comes of giving over to love’s irrational pull. Listening to her band’s new Rid of Me is like holding the shoulders of a friend as she fights back nausea; every calm moment holds the menace of a new outburst.”

The PJ posts are not going to stop, I suspect.
