I want very much to like Antony and the Johnsons. Dude’s voice is otherworldly — deep, syrupy and possessed-sounding, almost like hummingbird wings fluttering. WEIRD.

Like many people, I was introduced to Antony via Hercules and Love Affair’s “Blind.” But while Mr. Hegarty’s voice is beautiful, I alternately find it repellent. All I can figure is that it had a certain appeal in a dancier setting — showcased more directly over softer sounds, it’s almost overwhelming.

So I’ve been giving his latest, Swanlights, another fighting chance. After repeated listens, I’ve decided it’s something you can sort of sink into if you’re feeling morose. His voice becomes warm and comforting once you get past the non-humanness of it. Musically, it’s piano-driven cotton candy  — airy and gone before you know it.

And of course, just when you thought it couldn’t possibly get more ethereal, Bjork drops in on “Fletta,” and your mind gets blown all over again when these two crazy-voiced deities harmonize.

I don’t know that I’ll listen to this album on the regular, as it’s a little too downtempo for my taste. But Swanlights is an interesting thing in its own right — something that you won’t handle every day, but you might pick up and examine occasionally because it’s creepy and fascinating.
