Flashback Friday: Don’t Cry by Steele

If you haven’t seen this since, say, 1993, you might be surprised to learn that it’s actually way crazier than you remember. Indeed, the dramatic “Don’t Cry” is a pretty strong indicator of Axl Rose’s impending descent into madness.

Axl, let’s not forget, was knee deep in wackadoo stuff like regression therapy when he came up with this, and it shows. It’s a tale of reincarnation, I think? Of life and death? Of Axl as an ancient traveler on a winter’s night, and also as a creepy naked dude buried underground? It’s also a tale of how women can be such bitches – a recurring theme in Axl’s life. And it involves as many costume changes as Beyonce uses in an average show.

When I was a middle school-aged MTV addict, this was one of the videos I was always waiting for them to play. Click through to YouTube and enjoy the trip back to a more innocent time, a time when flannel was king, Axl Rose and Stephanie Seymour were not yet accusing each other of assault, and Blind Melon’s Shannon Hoon was still alive to do backup vocals.

Confidential to A.Walsh: WHERE’S IZZY.
